João Pedro Fonseca
Senior Researcher @Iquadrat Informatica S.L.
I’m João Pedro Fonseca, a telecom researcher and PhD candidate with a focus on 5G and 6G technologies. Currently, I’m pursuing my PhD at the University of Aveiro, where I research vertical-aware and dynamic system orchestration to optimize network performance. My work spans several innovative telecom R&D projects, from 5G slicing and orchestration to intent-based networking and open RAN architectures.
I’m currently a Senior Researcher at Iquadrat, where I help design and validate telecom solutions, specializing in network automation and intent-driven networking. Before this, I worked as an R&D Connectivity & NW Engineer at Capgemini Engineering, contributing to several projects around 5G/B5G technologies, such as: slicing, orchestration, and machine learning for NFV. My role also involved validating Open RAN and O-RAN architectures.
I started my career as a Research Fellow at Instituto de Telecomunicações, where I worked on system orchestration and contributed to H2020 5Growth. I’m also an Open Source Contributor to several projects. The more relevant contributions were to the ETSI Open Source MANO project, where I patched bugs and provide support to the community.
Beyond work, I’m passionate about open-source technologies and am a senior member of the University of Aveiro’s Linux User Group(GLUA). I co-maintain the group’s FOSS Public Mirror Service. GLUA regularly organizes workshops to promote Linux and other open-source tools.
